Hello All -

Looking for a spot on someone's over nite permit for Aug 11. I saw a post a month or so ago in which someone had spaces available on their Aug 11 permit. Mistakenly, I thought I'd be able to secure a permit online but no luck to date and I did not note the poster's name.

I called the reservation hotline today and the attendant confirmed, if I am able to secure a spot on someone's permit, that we do not need to hike together. I just need to carry a copy of the permit with me.

I've been checking the reservation site daily and no luck yet securing a permit.

Thank you!

No problem! Hopefully you and Clarence will be able to work something out.

In the event you are unable to use Clarence's extra permit it is very likely that you will be able to get a "walk up" permit the day prior to your planned hike. People often wait until the final day prior to cancelling, or do not show up to pick up their permits. Also, it is common that groups "shrink", and at the time of permit pickup they drop the number of hikers, which frees up permits for others. Simply go to the ranger station the day prior to your hike and check for available permits. Being early helps, since I think that established your position in the Que. There are nearly always permits left over/unused. Your date is a popular one, so being early might be important.

Good luck,

John

Thanks again for the info, John. I've been toying with the walk up idea but all my hiking buddies are out-of-state (Colorado, Wisconsin and Michigan) so this may be too large a risk.

Have not been able to connect with Clarence yet. Will keep trying.

Paula

Aug 11 is a Monday. The most pressure on permits is Fri-Sat. You would be able to get the permits if you go in the morning before and start asking for them.

Have you contacted Clarence via email? b515490@aol.com

Hi Paula,

I would not worry too much about the risk. There are 100 day hike permits issued every day, and 60 overnight permits as well. Since there are at least two days involved for the overnight permits this means that there are at least 220 other hikers on the trial at the same time you are. You are not really alone at all, and will most likely meet others hiking at your same/similar speed that you can join. However, I understand your preference for more predictable arrangements.

Regards,

John
