An interesting article about selecting proper hiking boots Here
The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Thanks, Bee.
I just have to add: Before I go on any backpack, I ALWAYS carry my pack a few miles several times in the week before I start. I load it down with jugs of water to match the weight I'll be carrying. This serves to toughen my feet and the joints and muscles all over.
Makes the end of the first day a whole lot better.
I usually get hot spots on the bottom of my feet after about three days, no matter what boots I have. At the end of those hikes, the bottom front of my foot is a solid layer of athletic tape. It really helps.
And I buy all of my boots on-line because I haven't found a store yet that carries the extra wide sizes I need.

Me, too, but for the opposite reason: I have extra narrow feet!

For me, it has more to do with fit than type. I wear something between 11 1/2 and 13, with 12 1/2 usually being what fits best. Since very few manufactures make such a size...I've become a not so choosy beggar.
I've been searching for light hikers for 2 years. Nothing seems to fit and I've tried on at least a dozen different styles from most of the usual suspects.

I am like Steve. I have an extra wide foot with a really high arch. My feet have actually gotten bigger. I guess they are flattening and spreading out. I have gone from an 9 EEE to 9 1/2 EEEE.Not an easy foot to shoe but especially difficult to boot. I am like wbtravis going with what fits best.I have been fitted by A16 and those boots still rubbed me on my left big toe. I have heavy leather Vaques which tire me out.The best boot for comfort I have found is a light weight gortex Dunham hiking boot I found on sale at Big 5.Got really lucky with a cheap boot that is really comfortable.I am afraid I will never find such a good fit with such comfort again.

I've heard good things about this New Zealand boot maker From the website, it appears they'll make a extra wide boot for you for the same price. The McKenzie is $235, which considering that includes shipping, is a good value for a hand-made boot.
