I don't if anyone has taken a look at the interactive PCT map that is using Halfmile's GPS data. (From what I understand, he and some others carry pretty sophisticated mapping/GPS data along the entire trail.)

What's cool is he has very specific waypoint data - including precise mileage - for the Whitney trail. Even better, you can also get a precise guide if going in from the PCT/JMT via the backdoor.

Just click 'full screen' and zoom in. You can add all sorts of overlays, including the original ruler & calculator derived FS trails.

I've been checking out some more of the Halfmile PCT apps, and they have a nice KML file for Google Earth. One example they demonstrate is allowing family/friends to track where you are with InTouch/Spot GPS coordinates.

Now, of course, any map system can use the same data, but because so many PCTers use a lot of JMT and spur trails through the Sierra, there's this treasure trove of Halfmile data that allows anyone following to see where you're at and other relevant information.

Since I'm now getting an InTouch, I know my wife will be very interested in having a chance to see where I am and what I'm doing while gone on a hike:

Halfmile also has this cool smart phone app:

Even though Halfmile tools are PCT centric, they are relevant to the Whitney area & parts of the JMT + spur trails (Kearsarge, Bishop, etc) because they're key features of the PCT as hikers come through the Sierra.
