Hi,
Any one can point me to the latest conditions on the road and Cotton Wood Lakes / Old Army Pass Trail to Langley? Thinking of camping up at Lake#4 and then bag Langley, spend the night and get the hell out ...

thnx

JOJO, not sure about the road -- I think they try to get all the roads open by May 1. But you can call the Inyo County roads department at (760) 878-0202 in Independence and ask.

The snow around Cottonwood Lakes is over 3 feet currently. You can see the Snow depth graph at Cottonwood Lakes, elev. 10150' link on the Mt Whitney Weather link above on the left.

Yup, go straight up and hang a right and try to tag Langley and then back down to lake 4 to spend the night ....we were trying to do MR but if the road is closed, then it is too much hassle .....So langley is nearby .... the goal is to get out in the snow and tag a 14'er....it is just that whitney and langley are familiar .,... don't care either way which 14er it is ....

Another view, similar to Bob's, taken a week earlier. The pass is right of center.

Isn't it safer to go up a chute up by lake #5?

Jojo, the word is out that the road is now open to Whitney Portal. Langley is not a quick climb with winter conditions. And that old Army Pass route looks steeper than the final 400 on the Whitney Mountaineers Route.

A woman died there last summer when she slipped.

I just called the County Road Dept number at the top of the thread.

I spoke to Twila, who said Whitney Portal and Onion Valley roads are open, but the Horseshoe Meadows road is still closed, and they don't have an estimated opening date for it yet.

Check out this cornice! (the moon is pretty nifty, too!)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.
