Would like to know if there are any West Sierra alternatives to driving 300 miles up 395 for good 2-3 day backpack trips. Just completed a beautiful 3 day trip to the North Fork of Big Pine Creek and it was spectacular with plenty of beautiful water. Looking to shave off a 100 miles and a couple of hours from my drive. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. lf

You may find

"Hiking the Golden Trout Wilderness" by Swedo
"Exploring the Southern Sierra, West Side" by Jenkins
"Exploring the Southern Sierra, East Side"

All to be very helpful to your needs. I've found them to be very accurate and descriptive.

Lots of possibilities between Lodgepole and Crescent Meadow, with a free Park shuttle service between. Check out "Sierra South" Kathy Morey.

I agree that "Sierra South" (and North) are great books.

However, geographically, it covers the region north of "Exploring the Southern Sierra, E and W"

They cover different areas, and I judged that the things covered in Sierra South were outside your stated travel time. Could be wrong for some of the southernmost stuff.

All these books are by my bedside, and are read and dreamed about often.
