I am climbing the Main trail in two weeks (5/22-23) for the first time and I was wondering whether in addition to crampons and an ice axe it is recommended that one wears a helmet or is that not necessary? I am a little concerned about the possibility of loose rocks on the chute to Trail crest.

As we plan to sleep at Trail Camp I am also wondering whether you would recommend brining along a shovel to level the tent site or is that overkill?

I appreciate all your comments. Thanks.

Jacob, I've not seen any recommendations to wear a helmet in that area. While many people wear them in the steeper sections of the Mountaineers Route, the main trail is not as steep, and doesn't have the rocky sections above that might release some debris.

As for the shovel, it is up to you, but I would pass on the extra weight. There are a number of flat campsites, and some of them are sure to be flat enough for your tent. And campers before you will have leveled spots, too. But if you want to be absolutely sure... smile

I was at Trail Camp yesterday - lots of snow, and quite level. It's packed hard - no need for snowshoes either.
