I've been meaning to use White Mountain Peak as a training hike for Mt. Whitney for a couple of years, but the timing has never worked out. I finally headed up there a few days ago:

Some highlights. Clicking any of the photos will bring you to the full galleries (~55 photos total)

Sunset a few hours before we started our hike:

How is the road fairing after these recent monsoons? The Ranger in Bishop says 4WD..I really want to do this one, but I've got only a 2008 Dodge Caravan...

Thanks everyone. I was a little worried about how the photos would come out. I had to order a new lens for my Sony Nex, so I carried our old Nikon D80 on this hike.

I was kinda surprised by how bad the road was. I don't think a 4wd is necessary, but the washboarding is really bad. My buddy drove his Honda CRV and it had a new noise in the front end by the time we were off the dirt road. We did see small cars up there, incuding a suzuiki econo-box.

Thanks for the heads-up on road conditions and the weather. We had an excellent White Mtn Peak day hike yesterday!

No problem! How was the road for your group? What did you drive?

The road was bumpy and scary, it was just my husband and I in his 2000 Silverado.

No problem with my 2003 Dodge Caravan. Just be careful to not cut the tire sidewalls on sharp rocks. A little over an hour travel from the Bristlecone Center where the pavement ends. 16 miles to the locked gate.

I was a little paranoid, but fine two years ago in my 05 Corolla.
