Horsetail Falls in Yosemite has become a must-see for many people. A friend went up Saturday, Feb 20, specifically to see it at sunset. He couldn't believe the crowds! Apparently so many people go to see now, that the park turns one lane of the two-lane road in and out of the park into a parking section. My friend said he had never seen anything like it in Yosemite. So I guess the advice should be: don't go during the Horsetail viewing week. And his result: Even though it was a sparkling day, clouds must have obstructed the sunset, so there was no glow on the falls that evening. Big turnout of photographers. This light show only occurs once/year, and due to recent drought has not really worked for several years. A few internet pics spread the word, and "instant crowds". My contribution: Taken Friday, Feb. 19th. Clouds limited the effect, but still good show. This photo was taken from the south side road. Taken Sat., Feb. 20th. Much better light, so more dramatic images. This photo was taken from the North side, closer to the base of El Capitan.

Thanks Steve, I stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge (just outside the park on Hwy 140), so only a 30 minute drive into the park. The only issue was parking near my intended site to take photos (there are literally hundreds sites that would work - so this is also not really a big deal). However, for those of us that hike, this is not really an issue. The sun only lights the falls for 20 minutes (or so) starting at ~ 5:15 PM, so there is much time to park and hike to the intended site. Departing in the chaos of several hundred cars all trying to get out of Dodge is the more difficult issue, but if you are not in a rush not a big deal. It is really a "festive" event, with much cheering when the Falls turn yellow, gold, and occasionally red.

Watch this full screen! Horsetail Falls Firefall 2016 from Shawn Reeder on Vimeo.
Horsetail Falls Firefall in Yosemite is one of nature's unique gifts. For about 2 weeks each year in February, if the conditions line up perfectly, the last light of the setting sun will illuminate just the waterfall and mist giving it a fiery appearance that truly is spectacular.

And there were dozens of sites like this, with literally hundreds of photographers snapping away.
