While I always carry paper maps and compass, they are rapidly becoming a backup. I can load sections of USGS 7.5 minute maps into my Garmin Montana 610. I navigated several cross country hikes in Death Valley last March with it. I marked several way points on each hike to insure that I was on the correct route. I always knew the distance and bearing to the next check point. The electronic compass pointed the way. I never needed the paper map or manual compass.

As far as LAT/LON is concerned, why would triangulation be needed? GPS tells me precisely if I am on the trail I plan to be on, or 50 feet right or left. Can a paper map do that?

Electronics fail. Whip out your $800 phone in the pouring rain, all but a few will fail.

My Garmin GPSMAP 60 can do much more than that. Good luck the 50'+/- in canyons. GPS technology has limitations and with phones, even more so. I have been using one more than ten years. It can't sample all that swell.

The wilderness is about what can happen. How's that mini work in the rain?

I've read people do the loop either way. Our group is going on Wednesday and have the GPS coordinates. Should be an adventure for us.
Thanks for everyone's advice, I appreciate you imputs.

So Gina... since Wednesday has come and gone - How was your trip smile ?

What a great hike this turned out to be. Strenuous but fabulous!
After reading warnings online about devils backbone, confusing trail intersections etc., we all did enough research and by the time we hit the trail, we were all totally comfortable and excited to be there--no problems finding our way. Very warm day with lots of bugs on the summit.

The Devils Backbone is a winter problem. People go up there with microspikes and trekking poles and get in way over there heads. This winter it cost two people their lives. In the summer, once you clear the ski runs, the Devils Backbone is a pussycat.

Last week, a group went off trail on purpose and cliffed out causing an air rescue.

Thx psykokid for the West Baldy coordinates, it was so worth the extra mile to locate that benchmark!
