Hello all,
I'm planning to head up to the Whitney Portal to do some basic snow/ice training on Saturday. I'm new, so, just going to do some low angle stuff. Is there another area that would be better-I don't want to take up parking room if I don't need to. Rx are appreciated.

M

I think that as of last night and today, Whitney, and maybe Whitney Portal, has a new coat of white. Whitney Portal road may be "closed" with a sign that people drive past, or hard-closed with a locked gate.

They put up a locked gate several years ago, but then it has been left open lately, allowing people to go up, but completely at their own risk.

If you go up, make sure you don't get into an icy spot where you can't drive out, and don't park down the road where rock fall off the steep mountainside can smash your car. But if you are ok with all those warnings, parking will NOT be an issue. wink
