OK, with the amount of snow CA has seen so far this season, when do you experts think the main trail will be passable without winter gear? Also how late in the year before the day hikers will be able to give it a try? By pictures posted of the store it looks like they have quite a bit already. Then for a bonus guess, when will the road be cleared?

In 2011, which saw a huge amount of snow, hikers were finally using the switchbacks about July 9.

I'll put down May 1 for the road.

Collateral effect of the snow in 2011 was that the day the switchers cleared, the InterAgency Visitor Center was mobbed with walk-ins mid-week. People who had canceled earlier permitted trips as well as people from the west side, especially the High Sierra Trail, who came up against obstacles such as snow bridges *over* the trail. If we get the same pattern this year, expect walk-ups to be easy to get as long as you can handle the snow, but much scarcer than usual as soon as the cables clear.

Salty makes a great point^^^

Also, if you are planning to submit a permit app, or even if you are trying to plan a time to set aside for trying walk-ins I might suggest aiming for mid-late Sept. (after Labor Day) the permit demand goes down, it gets cooler though Bighorn Park will get an brown tinge.

Most people assume it will be too cold, I don't expect walk-ins to remain scarce that far in to the season.
