I won a permit for September 29th for a day hike (2017). Planning on starting at 1AM. Are an ice axe and crampons absolutely necessary for hiking Mount Whitney this time of year. Is it pretty treacherous at the top with snow conditions this time of year? This will be my first attempt at Whitney and I'm trying to get info on generally what to expect up there for a September 29 hike? I appreciate any input from those that have done it this time of year and what to be prepared for.

Sept 29, if there is any snow, it will be from perhaps a new/recent storm. And ice axe/crampons do not help in new snow.

If there is any fresh snow, microspikes would be useful.
