I'm one of those lucky people that got a permit on my first attempt and am climbing Whitney on June 15th and 16th. Judging from this seasons snowfall I'm expecting a large amount of snow and ice still on the trail.
Here's the issue...I live in Texas...haven't had a pair of crampons or an ice axe in over a decade... Are there any places that rent those items in or near Lone Pine or do I just need to pony up the cash and get my own again.
Also, I've enjoyed the wealth of information here on this forum. Thanks to whoever are the folks responsible for keeping it up!

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find a place that rents ice axes. You can call Elevation in Lone Pine. Bishop is an hour's drive north, so probably not worth the extra distance, but try Eastside Sports. I'm pretty sure Elevation rents crampons.

I would go ahead and buy an ice axe; you can find them for $50-$60 on ebay.

Then, make sure you watch videos on the proper techniques and use, and once you are on the mountain, take some time to practice. Start by finding the links in this post: Links to important Whitney information

Thanks! Appreciate the information. I have used both before, just been awhile and gave them away when I started spending time in warmer areas.

Taking them more as a precaution if we get into a situation where we really need them, well, that's our summit!

June 15-16, you will appreciate having them. The crampons will be especially helpful going up the "chute" (slope west of the 99 switchbacks). Coming down, the ice axe should be ready in case you slip.

The "chute" will be full-on snow in June, and icy in the afternoon shadows, after the sun moves behind the crest.
