Hello everyone

Reading all the posts on this forum, explains the issues in making to the summit in present conditions. By June 18th, I understand there would still be need of ice axe and crampons, but would it be easier to summit? From what I read, going above trail camp seems very difficult as of now. In 4 weeks, would conditions improve to think of summit assuming we have all gear and AMS doesn't bother one much.

This forum has been very helpful since I thought of Mt Whitney hike. I appreciate each and every member to take out time and help out others in the group.

I probably won't able to answer your question. However I am also doing day hike on June 18 with all winter gear through MWT. It would be great to exchange planning tips/idea or to hike with you or your group. please let me know.
Thank you.

June 18 you will likely find that the switchbacks are not usable yet, so people will be climbing the slope west of the switchbacks (the "chute").

In good conditions, a few people might be going up that in trail runners and not much else, but that is really NOT a good idea. Ice axe and crampons, and knowledge and experience using them is a much better idea. Do understand that the slope can ice up in the afternoon, and become way more dangerous compared to mornings when sun softens the snow.

I also have a permit for mid-june and I'm curious if there is liquid water at trail camp now or are things still too frozen? If frozen what are the odds it will thaw in the next few weeks?

Thanks

I am guessing that by mid-June water should be accessible, but I hope someone who has been there will report.
