I've been working up a unique visual tool since my bucket list climb in June 2013. Wish I'd had it.

    Check out www.panoramapaul.com.

Super cool! I've been thinking about making an app that does something like this - point your phone camera at the mountains and based on your GPS and compass heading, overlays the name of each peak it sees.

Goldscott,

This app exists. Check out ViewRanger: http://www.viewranger.com/en-US

The app is free for both IOS and Android. Many maps are free (open street, open bike, etc..., and USGS 1:24,000 for contiguous USA, Hawaii and Alaska is $24.00

Maps can be downloaded to your device for use off line.

Is this app better than Peak.ar? I've tried a couple peak overlay apps and have been disappointed. It seems very hard to get the peaks that I want labeled in the distance range that interests me, and I end up seeing only the peaks I've never heard of.

I've used the PeakFinder app in the past to identify peaks, but I've used Viewranger for a little while recently and it is nice how it overlays the peaks over the live camera picture. Not always matched up exactly, of course, but a very nice tool.

I think it's ok. This is a hobby, and PPaul isn't going to turn this into a big business.

It couldn't be more Whitney summit - specific.

There's already a phone app for just that called "Peakfinder.com". It does a pretty good job, but nowhere near the detail that is in my map. Some of the labels took me half an hour to gain the confidence I needed using topo software and several websites.
