My group backed out of our overnight permit. I would still like to hike and try to summit but I am apprehensive as I would be hiking alone and this will be my first attempt at Whitney. I enjoy hiking by myself as I have done it in the past many times but because I am unfamiliar with Whitney I think that might be a bad idea. I was hoping there might be a few different groups hiking the same day that wouldn't mind if I tagged along. Let me know so I can coordinate my schedule. Thanks for reading.

good fortune finding some hiking partners! I will be in the same situation starting August 8. From recent beta, there should be a good number of hikers up there, the hard part will be finding folks that match your speed and abilities. Have a safe trip. BTW, I currently have an extra overnight permit.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for responding. I agree with your points by the way, thought about that as well. I have to check with the wifey but I might be interested in your extra overnight permit if you were offering it up as I interpreted. With my group backing out I was thinking about doing a training hike on the 28th and showing up to try and get an unclaimed permit in late July or early August. I would much rather know that I have one. My pace is usually moderate (not trying to break any records)but I don't mind going a little slower or speeding it up. If I'm honest I usually hike alone as I like to take my time but I still set some time and location milestones so I reach my location for the day. Let me know if that sounds ok to you, no hard feelings if not.

Hi.. I was wondering if you have any experience with crampons and ice axes? My boyfriend and I are doing Whitney in a day on the 29th and I would feel better if we followed or hiked near someone with knowledge of stuff we aren't experiences in. We are both experienced hikers but not with crampons or axes. We also move at a good pace. We would be starting at 2 am

I'm entering on the 28th and camping at Trail Camp. I'll be getting up early for a summit attempt on the 29th. I think our timing will be a little off. Maybe we can coordinate to pass each other when I'm on my way down. I can give you guys an update of what to expect on the trail up ahead and how much you guys will need your crampons and ice axes. There is a chance I may cancel my trip all together but if so I can let you guys know.

You won't be totally alone, trust me. I summited on the 17th, solo, on a day permit, and met great people on the trail. I even tagged along with some of them for portions of the trail going up and down until we had to part ways. Some even gave me words of encouragement when I was struggling during the last two miles form Trail Crest and Summit.

I used GAIA GPS on my phone on airplane mode, but didn't use it as much as the trail was pretty straight forward. The trail got a bit lost at Mirror Lake when you're ascending the rocks but once you're over it, there's a foot path in the snow that leads you right to Trail Camp, unless things have changed since last week.
