Hello my friends... I'm looking for current trail conditions on Mt Baden-Powell. Information I have (from a good trusted source) says his information has the trail still pretty snowy and icy.

My Scout Troop wants to hike this one in a couple of weeks but none of them are winter trail worthy at this point. Has anyone been up there lately?

Thanks!!!

It's been a month since I was up there. The snow level was 6,900'. My guess, based on doing Cucamonga <two week ago, there is going to be a lot of snow over 8,000' but my guess is a trail will have beaten in to some extent.

There was a lot of snow on the north faces as we drove down the Cajon Pass on Sunday.

Thanks... thats pretty much what I was told.. adn what I thought..

"Beaten in to some extent" doesn't give me the warm fuzzies in regards to trying to lead a bunch of inexperienced boys (and adults)... I think we'll wait on this one a few more weeks...

There will be an Outdoors Club bunch heading up June 12, 2010. Hopefully, the leader will post a TR.

That is the same day that my Troop wants to go.... I'll call the ranger station this morning and see what kind of trail information they can give me...

FWIW, I was up there on 5/31. The trail was snow covered at the halfway point, so it was prety much straight up with ice axe and crampons. Snow condition was pretty firm on the way up in the morning but was very slushy as the day warmed up making climbing down a bit of a slip-slide affair. The temps are starting the warm and I would expect the trail the be "mostly" clear by mid-June. The San Gabriel Mountains Discussion Forums are a great place to find more current info.

I believe that to be utter nonsense based on what I saw on Cucamonga Peak a week ago.

Is there snow? Yeah, there is snow. Is it 6 to 12'? A drift or two maybe. Is the trail open? My guess is that it is mostly open with a trail beaten in most of the way up.

I would not take a bunch of kids based on the above. However, personally would go up there without ice axe and crampons knowing I could bypass whatever impasse I would find below the ridge.

The most dangerous part of that trip is the ridge at 9,200' and my guess the whole of it is melted out.

What the person at the Forest Service told you is normal April conditions exist when it is more like early to mid May.

6-12 inches... not feet... sorry.

I would have gone if it was a group of adults... but as this was a trip with the boy scouts we decided it was best to not go this time around. We'll get it a little later in the year...

It's my fault, you said inches. I can't believe someone at the FS would give you snow coverage in inches.

I came down Cajon Pass today and it appears there is still a lot of snow in the couloirs on the north side of Baldy. I was not far enough west to get a good look at B-P.

At 6 to 12" I would go. You could go in from Dawson Saddle with no exposure whatsoever, summit Throop, going up the northwest side of the peak, then onto Burnham and Badden-Powell. This way the kids at least get the initial peak and would be climbing the west side...the side least likely to have any snow at B-P. ACH seems to be open beyond Vincent Gulch, CalTrans no longer says it is closed on its website.

The trail on Baden-Powell has always been one of the last have snow in the San Gabriels, usually into June because of the northern exposure and the tree coverage. It's impossible to know the trail conditions from the parking lot or from the road, etc without getting on the trail itself (or talking to someone who has).
