First time doing overnight at Whitney in two weeks and was planning on camping at trail camp. Wondering if the ground is soft enough to use stakes (was hoping to leave them in my car to avoid extra weight but might take them anyways) or does most everyone just tie guy lines to rocks (e.g. via the big rock little rock staking method)?

I just went to look at my photos to see if I staked my tent and it looks like I did. I probably got lucky, because the whole darn thing is a rock.

I stayed a night at trail camp around this time last year and was not able to get stakes into the ground (used a large rock to try and hammer). That may be unique to the spot I pitched up in, but I'd bring some extra line to tie up if you have it.

At Trail Camp, there is some soft sand. However, many of those spots will be grabbed up first. Then all that is left is solid rock.

Bring some rope to tie your tent to some big rocks. You may get lucky to find a little sand, but it's mostly rock up there.

Some of the spots already have been setup with boulders in the proper positions by previous campers.
