Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has seen my wife, LaVonne or Onnie (sometimes Wingfoot or Trees).
She was dropped off at the portal on 8 Aug and I have not heard from her since. She has done the Mt. Whitney about 25 or so times and the mountaineering ascent about 24 times until she fell down the chute about a year ago and broke her wrist. She stated she would no go that trail again as she is 68 and was having trouble with some of the moves. She was to continue on after Mt. Whitney on the JMT trail. She is usually able to call me to say she is ok at least once from some viewpoint or at the top. She is five foot, six inches tall, blond, and weighs about 105 pounds. If you have any information please leave a message or call me at (714) 394-5087. Thanks!

Edit: here's her picture:

I am fairly certain we crossed paths on Thursday 10th around 3PM on the switchbacks (12 up from the cables) while descending back to trail camp. She was heading up, I was watching her move very slowly and kept an eye on her as I was going down thinking I need to stop and chat to see how see is doing, where she is going and general conditions.

At the time I was counting the number of switchbacks until I reached the cables to let the ranger gal know where someone had tossed a wagbag down the back side of the cliffs. It is about 40 yards down the slope, 22 switchbacks up from the cables.

We talked for several minutes, she was heading to the top of MtWhitney (possibly-not clear at time) before descending down the JMT /Crabtree Meadows trail. I mentioned to her the location about 100 yards down JMT from intersection with trail crest to rest for night for easier ascent in the morning before continuing on. I am sure others crossed paths with her this day or the next. Noteworthy this was the 10th versus the 8th when she was dropped off at the portal. She was wearing a green/jade pendant at the time, hat and sleeping pad was attached on the side of backpack - she said she was not balanced properly.

I called Gerald earlier today and based on a this, I believe it was her, and others may have also crossed paths later on the 10th or 11th.

Thank you for the concerned reply. I have not received any communication from my wife yet, it is 10:10 am on 15 Aug, Tuesday. I have had no other replies than yours and am extremely worried.

Have you filed a missing person report with the Inyo County Sheriff?

I posted on the Facebook JMT group. Hoping that someone there will report seeing her. I'll let you know if anyone reports back. Here's the link in Facebook, but you have to be a member of Facebook, AND a member of the JMT group in order to see it.

By the way, before she goes out on a trip alone again, set her up with a Garmin InReach unit, so you can watch her progress via satellite signals. It's a good idea for anyone hiking alone.

What was her full itinerary, from summit to Crabtree to where? If she is 24 hours overdue at her exit, it may be time to notify Inyo Sheriff's Office and SEKI.

Any chance she was wearing a big green necklace and matching ring? I descended Whitney to WP on 8/9.

Yes, that sounds like what she would wear. What way was she going? Did you talk to her?

She planned to exit Onion Valley and spend tonight, 8/15/17, at the Independence Inn. We should know soon if all is ok.

We saw her on 8/9, about 2 miles from Whitney portal. She was sitting on a rock. She was very talkative and was asking questions about JMT conditions. We had just finished a JMT that day. She didn't seem in a huge hurry. It was about 4 o'clock that day.

All, I just got off the phone with a ranger that said they talked to her about 1pm on the 13th at Tyndall Creek I think he said. She was 25 miles from her exit and was having trouble with her backpack and would need to get a new one when she exits. They still have an alert out to look for her and will let me know when they find her for verification. Thank You for your help!

She's just running a little behind maybe. If she made Forester Pass yesterday, she'd be over Kearsarge today.

Tyndall is a very popular camp, so if she stopped there early on Sunday (1:00) that pace could be at least a day behind what she had planned and still moving ok. 25 miles and two passes could take a while with nothing more than a pack problem. Not out of the woods yet, but at least down off the big hill as of Sunday.

Anyone in contact by inReach or other with someone between Crabtree and Kearsarge in the last couple of days?

I think I may have talked to her at Whitney summit on the 11th. Is she from Pala?

Yes, thanks. We are from the sprawling metropolis of Pala. She was unusually slow due to her new ultra-light backpack problems. The bottom seam tore out and she put it back together with duct tape, which was not stable. She made it to the Onion Valley trailhead early this morning and is backpack shopping. I bought a Garmin Inreach tracking/communication device and Fedex'd it to her. So, we should have better communication and the automatic tracking should help.
