Hello,

A few friends and myself will be hiking the High Sierra Trail in September. We were hoping to leave a car at Whitney Portal so that when we exit we have a car. Tried looking online if parking is allowed overnight for a few days, but couldnīt find anything. Could anyone let me know if we have the option to leave the car overnight and if there is a permit needed? Any help would be great!

Thanks!
Cody

I'm not aware of any official rule or time limit, but I parked at the portal for six nights at the beginning of July while my daughter and I hiked around from Horseshoe Meadow. I asked about doing so when we picked up our permit and was told that as long as we were either starting or finishing our trip at the portal, we could pretty much park there for as long as we wanted.

My group left cars at the portal (the overflow hiker lot), and this appears to be standard practice. Just make sure you don't park in a day-use zone. Label any food/gear you stash in bear boxes with your name and finish date.
