Hello fellow altitude enthusiasts!

I'm headed up the MR next week, and had a couple general questions as my previous experience on the MR is mid-winter with heavy snow/ice conditions.

With the summer heat I'm wondering if there is any need for Microspikes or an axe for either the chute or the final 400'. I've also heard reports recommending bringing rock shoes for the final 400', is this really necessary for someone who is comfortable with exposure?

I am confident in my own ability to read terrain and route finding, but I am going with a group not all necessarily experienced in technical hiking.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I consider all mountaineers brothers(and sisters) in altitude!

None of our party of 3 used spikes or crampons weeks ago. We avoided snow the entire trail, although we saw patches of it.

The other 2 used climbing shoes, but I was fine with regular boots on the final 400.

You should consider wearing a helmet as there are a lot of loose rocks in the chute.

Have your paper permit on hand. I was checked by a ranger the last 2 times up the MR/North Fork of Lone Pine Creek.

Happy and safe hiking!
