I just received my email results, and was unsuccessful obtaining a permit for either of the two weekends in October that I had applied for. Oh well, I will prepare to climb Mt. Langley, and hope that I can score a no show permit for Whitney on the day of.

Good luck to everyone else.

Techdoc, try revisiting the rec.gov site on April 1. If still unsuccessful continue to visit the site in subsequent weeks as various available dates will pop up. I had never won a lottery permit since the new system began until this year but always could snag a date usually within a month of the close of the lottery. Good luck.

For October, you have almost 100% chance of scoring walk in permits. A lot of people back out then.

My friend and I submitted 9 dates and we got our 4th pick. October 15 overnight permit, spending 3 nights on the mountain. Portal to Outpost Camp, OP to TC, and after a summit bid, back down to either OP or Lone Pine Lake.

Hope to see some of you on the mountain!

Yes, and it's not just October. In fact, I didn't even bother to enter the lottery this year because it was so easy to get a walk-in last year and the year before.

Overnight permits are not as easy, but if you have a day or two of mid-week flexibility then you are likely to snag one or more.

@TechDoc, Mt Langley is another fun 14k hike, especially through Cottonwood Lakes, but don't give up on a Mt Whitney summit this year.

edit: For those who were able to get a permit in the online lottery, be sure to confirm when able to -- before the deadline.

Fortunately they let us confirm and pay for the permit right away. Several years ago I lost my permit because then they made you wait until April to confirm and then you had to remember!

Congratulations to all the lottery winners. My lottery was successful and I'm hoping to summit for the first time in August.

Where do we apply for the "perfect weather" lottery?? smile
