Hi - I won the Mt. Whitney Permit system for up to 4 people on October 4th 2019. But I had no idea I had to pay $15 per person. I actually do not have a group formed and I didn't know I had to pay per person, so I am wondering what can I do with the extra permits?

Can I change the number of permits I need before I buy them? Or am I stuck with 4 and have to pay for them and hopefully find 3 other people?

Thanks for any advice.

- Jeff

You should be able to cancel some of the extra permits, but you'll have to figure out how many you want to keep soon.

Not sure if you can do it online, but if you call they can probably assist in modifying the number of permits before you pay for them.

Holly, unless you want to join Sachiker's group, you won't be able to really use 2 of the spots without him around. If you get stopped on the trail and he isn't around, the rangers will not be happy.

Wandering Jim, people split up all the time, so I don't think rangers require that. Each hiker in a group needs to carry a tag on their pack, or a copy of the permit.

Holly, you cannot "buy" a permit that was won by someone else -- they are not transferable. You would have to meet SacHiker before the hike and get your permits that he had already obtained.

Edit: I should add, though, that the hike leader is required to acknowledge they are responsible for all in their group.
