Hey guys, I just scored my first Whitney permit for June 1st. Unfortunately, time doesn't allow us to spend multiple days at altitude before hand. We will be flying in the night of the 30th and driving up, camping at Portal (hopefully) for the 31st and then waking up early and shooting for the summit. I've heard there is a large amount of snowfall this year, so I am expecting to bring crampons, ice ax etc for the climb. Given the most likely snowy conditions, is a 2am start time from portal sufficient to complete the entire mt whitney trail? If there are any wise words of wisdom or tips y'all have it would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have the plan dialed in. The walk-in camp sites at the portal pretty much always have space.

If there is any way possible, spending two nights at altitude before you hike will greatly improve your acclimatization.

Also, if you are worried about having enough time, you can always start earlier! A few years back we had to get back to Vegas for our flight out, so we started the climb around 10pm the day before. Just make sure you cross into the Whitney Zone after midnight...
