Hello! My friend and I are hiking Mt. Whitney on June 29. I read several reports of snow past Trail Camp...are crampons a must? We were also planning to leave our stuff in Trail Camp and just take the 10 essentials to the summit...is it safe to leave our tents, backpacks, etc. at Trail Camp?

Thank you for any valuable information.

Your stuff should be OK at Trail Camp. Nearly everyone who camps there leaves their stuff when heading to the summit.

On the other BB Doug reports that the switchbacks are now opened.

Personal safety equipment, like crampons and an axe are an individual decision. To make the proper decision, you need experience with the particular circumstances you are about to run into.

I am the chicken of the hills, I put fangs on early, take'm off later than most. I am a fairly good judge of what I am going need to haul up that hill based on reports and what see from the trailhead.

Leave your things at Trail Camp, the larcenous usually don't like hard...and it is hard hauling 35-40# downhill. With that said, I would not leave any expensive electronics hanging around...GPS, iPod, etc.

"Everyone" leaves their stuff at Trail Camp and it is safe. From there, just take the essentials: Proper clothes, some food, water, crampons and ice axe. Right now crampons and ice axe are a must to climb the chute from Trail Camp. Crampons for going up, ice axe for coming down. I hiked it last week (6/23-6/24). You will also walk through snow in several places just getting to Trail Camp, but no need for crampons. Read my report for more details.

Good Luck!
