Does anyone have any ideas on not having to bring a 2 or 3 pound bear cannister with you into the back country but something lighter that still works? Thanks

I’ve been using an Ursack the last few years. It’s legal in most, but not all, places. It’s passed the same tests as the canisters, but mine hasn’t been attacked yet. There are other threads that discuss food storage.

i'm looking for a bear cannister that can handle about 3-4 days worth of food for a solo hiker and is certified for use in SEKI/Inyo. so far the available choices seem to be:

UDAP No Fed Bear (455 cu in, 2.4 lbs, 8"D x 10"H, $70)
Bare Boxer Contender 101 (275 cu in, 1.6 lbs, 7.4"D x 8"H, $60)
Lighter1 Lil Sami (300 cu in, 1.3 lbs, 7"D x 9"H, $95)
Bearikade Scout (500 cu in, 1.75 lbs, 9"D x 8"H, $255)
Bear Vault 450 (440 cu in, 2.1 lbs, 8.7"D x 8.3"H, $70)

i'm worried the Lil Sami and Contender might be a little small to fit all the food and toiletries i'd need for a 4-day trip. the Scout is just way too expensive, and it's not on the SEKI approved list (though the Weekender and Expedition are, so it's probably ok). ruled out the BV450 because i don't like the locking mechanism, and because of reports of areas where bears have learned to defeat or chew through them.

that leaves the UDAP which is what i'm leaning towards for now. Does anyone have experience with any of these cannisters and can offer recommendations?

I have an Ursack with aluminum liner, and a Bear Vault. I take the Ursack most of the time.

The UDAP looks like a Garcia copy.

The Ursack is legal in Inyo NF, which includes large areas of John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness, especially around the Mammoth area (between Yosemite and SEKI). Its worth buying an Ursack for those kind of trips, if you have the money and go to those areas.

I wouldn't worry about the Bear Vault not working. They changed the lid years ago and its hard enough for a human to open. smile

similar design but smaller/lighter:

UDAP No Fed Bear (455 cu in, 2.4 lbs, 8"D x 10"H, $70)
Garcia (614 cu in, 2.75 lbs, 8.8"D x 12"H, $75)
