I recognize it is almost one month out but can anyone share some insight (based on current conditions) if they think microspikes can be used rather than crampons on this date. Going up the main trail.

thanks

I made a comment on another forum regarding microspikes v.s. crampons and some others came to the same conclusion I'm about to discuss.

Take every thing I say with a huge grain of salt since I am a newbie when it comes to traction devices (and Whitney in general), but I can see almost no use for microspikes unless you will only be walking on mostly flat icy ground.

Once you need to ascend or the snow covers the ice more than a couple inches, microspikes can clump with snow and become basically useless. Crampons would be the correct choice.

Given it's only a month, I'd say your chance to hit snow is very good and would suggest crampons.

Lastly, this is the trip reports section of the forum. Your question may get more exposure in the gear heads or general section.
