It's getting close to my July 11th trip and after completing an overnight on the south loop trail at Mt. Charleston, NV I have come to the conclusion that the blue foam pad I got is woefully inadequate for a stomach/side sleeper.

Being short on funds after purchasing a new sleeping bag I am wondering if there is anywhere I can rent a sleeping pad in Lone Pine?

I "Googled" and found these stores.

Army Navy surplus stores in Las Vegas.

Hope this helps.

Have fun...

Journey well...

I talked to someone at the Elevation store in Lone Pine, and she says she has a 9 oz 1" foam pad (72" long) for $20. But she does not rent pads.

Maybe that is what you're trying to get away from. I know I couldn't handle that anymore.

Thanks for the updates guys, I actually thought about it and decided to call my local REI, they rent them (treker self inflating model) for $6day and $3 each additional day and do not charge for the pickup or return dates, so I will be going that route.

I had a blue closed cell foam pad, the cheap kind you get from wal-mart for $6. 72x20x0.4" I figured since I can sleep on the rug on a hardwood floor in my livingroom that it would be sufficient. Boy was I wrong. So glad I did a shakedown run.

At least renting I can see if I like the whole self inflating thing before I spend a lot of money on a pad.

These people rent gear specifically designed for Whitney trips (among others). While located in Scottsdale AZ, they ship to you. They have mattress pads. I have not used them so this is not a personal recommendation, but I thought that their website and approach were pretty good. (However, the pad they are listing, at 1.6 pounds, may be a bit heavy.)

Anything is better than closed cell foam of side sleepers...I know because I am one. I use a BA Insulated Air Mattress, which is better than any of the Therm-a-Rest products in Akichow's link. However, TaR lightweight series products are ok but you are going to have sore shoulders in the AM. At least, your hips will not be killing you.
