Two questions: Are Micro spikes still needed around the cables and how wet or dry will my boots be at steam crossings.

Just made to summit on 7/23.

The recent weather is not good, lot of rain, be sure to carry rain suits.

Micro Spike is not needed at the cable of 99 switchbacks, but nice to have to pass the last 120 feet ice right below the summit.

If you choose the 0.5 miles old trail from the Whitney portal, then merge to main trail, you can keep boots dry while crossing steams, but careful.

Hi Dale, I'm unsure if you've already made your trip but I thought I'd share this old but helpful post on the location of the Old Trail which bypasses the stream crossings at the beginning/end of the hike:

I was told by the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center that microspikes are needed. So I packed them. But I never actually used them. Others here would disagree about the need for them. So LOTS depends on your tolerance for walking through snow without them.
