Going to Whitney late Oct. Never really been on the ice.

What's everyone's take on full blown crampons vs light weight ice cleats??

Crampons are more useful when there is steep compacted off-trail snow. In October, you will be following the trail, and what snow there might be is going to be packed down on the trail. Ice cleats or micro-spikes is all you need.

We are taking the mountaineers route.

What about in the schute? That's where I'm worried the most.

We will decend the John Muhr trail down the switch backs n cable's.

When you don't specify, the Main Trail is assumed. Above answers for that.

Mountaineers Route? Take the crampons. Recent snows will pile up, and you will be stepping onto unconsolidated snow, hoping for a grip underneath. You need your ice axe, too.

If there is enough snow on the Mountaineers’ Route to require traction devices, you should have stiff boots and real crampons. Micro Spikes and similar “ice cleats” are probably fine on the Main Trail in October, but they have no place on the Mountaineers’ Route.

More importantly, if you have “never really been on the ice,” you should get some snow and ice experience somewhere else. The Mountaineers’ Route is not the place to teach yourself these skills.
