I’m planning a trip to the Eastern Sierra Thurs 1/2 to Sat 1/4. On Thursday, I want to drive up as close as I can get without encountering snow to Whitney Portal, or walk if the road is closed. Is it legal to drive or walk on the closed road? Also, how high up would I have to go on the road until I see snow on it?

Sometimes there is a locked gate, other times it is "soft closed" -- a road closed sign that some people drive around. If it is hard closed, it is a 3-mile walk up to Whitney Portal.

If you drive around the sign, you travel at your own risk, so stop at any significant rockfall or snow. It is completely ok to walk up the road.

If you go, please report back what you find. If you email or text pictures to me, I'll post them. Or better yet, post them here yourself (but it takes a little messing around).

After yesterday's storm, the snow will start pretty low.

Thank you for the photos. Do you think the road would be completely clear to at least the switchback? According to this website the snow levels would be around 8-12 inches there.

Maybe 8-12 inches at Whitney Portal, but probably clear at the first switchback.
