Anybody have word in current snow conditions in the Tuttle Creek drainage on Langley east side? Heading up from Central Coast next week. Looks like we’ll have a balmy weather window. Interested in if the snow is deep enough to cover willows, brush, etc.

Or, anyone been up North Fork to Whitney MR? similar terrain and plants, could work as a good litmus.

Thanks!

I went up last Wed/Thursday - parked at the road closed sign, hiked the 3.5 miles up the road which was 90% clear, a few snow/ice spots but no need for snowshoes or crampons. At the trailhead someone with ski's put down a perfect packed down trail path along the normal path to follow and the trail was in great conditions, went up without crampons but came back down with crampons so I didn't slip. I decided to take the main trail which continued to be in really nice condition until near Lone Pine Lake when I started postholing all over. I put on the snowshoes but it didn't help as much as I would have liked. I decided to camp there and came down the next day, and will try again this week on the mountaineer trail. I did go up the North Fork path a bit on my way down to check it out and it also looks good. Enjoy, really nice conditions.

Thanks for the report, sounds like the lone pine drainage was pretty good conditions. My past experience in the drainage with little snow was tough, postholing was compounded by the small snow cover over the brush making the hiking even more difficult. were manzanitas poking through the snow or were they covered?

It was mixed brush tips showing. For me, deep postholing was the biggest hazzard and concern and need to watch carefully.

Sounds like you visit Whitney regularly. Are you planning an ascent any time soon?
