Total shutdown. The Mt. Whitney trail might get a chance to recover for a while.

Bob, note that it excepts trailheads. I think the primary intent of that order is to prevent people from camping or picnicking at USFS "developed" sites.

More bad news for you...

The Bishop Pass trailhead parking lot is going to be closed periodically this summer for road repair. It will be interesting to see how the USFS deals with road-side parking.

It's tough being a hiker...maybe just hike in and stay until the virus has died out. Screw the permits, I say!

It's going to be interesting. I won't be hiking until mid September so I hope the trailheads will be open by then, if they have to close them for a while. A lot can happen between now and summer hiking season.

After all, it's only been 3 weeks since all hell broke loose with the shutdowns, and cases/deaths are expected to peak in the next month or so. After that, then they can slowly relax some of the restrictions. I would think that hiking, even though it's not "essential", is a low risk outdoor activity and will be allowed, even in the Sierra. Much lower risk than going to the grocery store or especially having to ride a bus or subway.

Yes, hiking in the Sierras is relatively low-risk, except for rock-fall, mosquito born illnesses, hypothermia, flash-floods, lightning, bears, rattlesnakes, marmots, navigation mistakes, angry hikers, and...oh yes...piles of human doo-doo on the Mt Whitney trail.

But at least it is much safer than the drive up from Smell-A.
