FYI, I just spoke with the Wilderness Permit Office to try and nail down permits for 7/15. No luck yet, but Jessica mentioned that they have availability for July 4, 5, 6 & 7. The website shows only day permit availability for 7/7 (3 of them). I believe they're somewhat slow in updating their website numbers.

Wanted to pass this along in case anyone is mulling a holiday week climb of Whitney. I failed to ask her whether they were day or overnight.

When I spoke to the permit office last week, they said that they because of internet security enhancements, it is more difficult for them to update the Permit Availability Page in a timely manner. Therefore, take what is listed with the Bonneville Salt Flats.

FYI, called again today - still can't get my dates (yet), but there are permits available the 12th and 13th.

Well, you can see people are starting to call in and release their unusable permits. There is probably an optimum window -- about a week before the hike -- when the most people call in and release their slots. I sure wish they would get a financial incentive to turn them back.

I hope you get yours in a couple of days!
