My wife has decided to come on my trip to Whitney(July 27th). She is not into hiking, but would like to camp at Lone Pine lake. What is the trail from the Portal to the lake like? I saw a photo of a split log crossing. Can you go around it or is not a factor on the hike.

Thanks
Tony

Welcome to the forum, Tony. Lone Pine Lake is around 2.5 miles & something less than 1600 feet of gain. And it's beautiful.

Hi, Tony

The trail to LPL is not difficult unless you are WAY out of shape! It is 2.8 miles one way.

Log crossing: Flattened logs and easy to cross. Just be sure your proprioreceptors are working good. In other words, don't sweat it!

Camping at Lone Pine Lake: You can. No fires allowed on the MWT. Propane/white gas stoves allowed. You can fish there.

My wife and I will be in the area between July 25-29 at Site 44 with BruinDave, BruinJane and TeamBruin. We plan on taking a hike to LPL to do some flyfishing (catch and release). You are welcome to join us. Summit attempt July 28, 2010 if permit available for two.

Have fun.

Journey well...

Hi, Tony!

Clicking here will take you to another topic in this forum which has videos of each section of the entire Main Trail -- sped up to 3x the normal speed -- which allows you to get a good feel for the lay of the land, but obviously more quickly. The first 3 videos posted in that topic take you from the trailhead to not far past Lone Pine Lake.

Enjoy!
