Wow, I inadvertently timed my trip to the Sierra with my daughter at the perfect time to see the Perseids this year!

Ooooooo! Ahhhhhhhh!

August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year's shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13th, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. The thin, crescent moon will be out of the way early, setting the stage for a potentially spectacular show. For best viewing, look to the northeast after midnight.

August 13 - Triple Conjunction with the Moon. The planets Venus, Mars, and Saturn will all be close to the thin, crescent moon on this evening. Look to the west just after sunset.

Thanks for the heads up, Steelfrog. I just happened to be on a backpack trip last summer during the same time.

We were camped at Marie Lake on the JMT, and I watched the sky until I couldn't keep my eyes open -- which wasn't very long. smile

I promised myself that I'd wake up later and watch in the early AM when it was supposed to be the optimum time. But that never happened.

HOLY paraskavedekatriaphobia or triskaidekaphobia, BATMAN! A cosmic lightshow and an astrological trifecta right after Ramadan!

Trivia: How many gongs in the song, "Hell's Bells" by AC/DC?

Have fun...

Tonight is the night! Check it out.

Last night I noticed the thin moon and Venus nearby just after sunset.

From this link, a picture of what we should see tonight, August 13, 2010:

Got out of tent at Lower Soldier Lake Friday night to water the flower and saw two very long meteor streaks. We saw about a dozen during the weekend.

The trip was not timed for the showers; just an added bonus.

It is my unfortunate duty to inform all y'all...the Skeeters are still out and biting.
