Does anyone know what the chances are of getting an overnight permit for Sept 17-18 for three people by walking up at 11am the day before. I have been calling the reservation line every 1-2 hrs for the past 3 weeks and just haven't had any luck. Thanks for any info.

Your chances are very good. You have the correct time to show up, so I am sure you have been reading all the hints.

And understand that the Unused Permits numbers that are shown here are the numbers at the end of the day for the date of entry. The number of no-shows on any given day are always quite a bit more.

And keep calling in this week. Most people who call in and release their reservations do so in the few days just before their hike.

When you go in on the day before to ask about no-shows, also ask about hiking that same day. They may still have some available for the 16th.

jgool, your chances of getting a cancellation by continuing to call twice a day are much better between now and the 17th - most folks wait till just 2-4 days out to cancel or reduce group size. Don't be discouraged at no movemnet up to this point - keep calling every day and I bet you get your permits before you get to Lone Pine. I did the same thing looking for a July 14th date and finally got the cancellations I needed when I called the second time on the 12th.

As Steve's post pointed out, there are a lot of permits left unused. If you look even closer, the only days that didn't have unused permits were fridays or saturdays. In other words, if you start on any other day than friday or saturday, the chances are extremely high that you will get permits.

I got an overnight permit for 9/7-8 by calling in on 9/4.
