After 40 years I made my second trip to Mt. Whitney with my son who as making his first.

great weather, great trip for the most part.

A couple of negative observations:

Trail Camp is the filthiest backpack campground I have seen in 50 years of backpacking. We hauled out as much extra trash as we could fit into our backpacks. What is wrong with backpackers nowadays.

Main activity on the peak was calling friends on cell phones. Such is wilderness today, sigh...

Congratulations getting back to the summit, RangersRest!

And good for you hauling out the trash. Your service is appreciated by everyone here. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of hikers who make Mt. Whitney their one and only trip into the mountains, and since they will probably never go back, they don't care how they leave it.

Regarding the cell phones and wilderness: Mt Whitney is about the worst place to go if you want wilderness. I can suggest hundreds of other places you could go in the Sierra to have a better wilderness experience. But then they aren't the highest point in the "Lower 48". Highest point and Wilderness are mutually exclusive.

Did you bring back any pictures?

This descriptor always makes me wonder: Where are the "Higher 2"?

I guess Alaska is big enough for two. When talking about Whitney to non outdoorsy friends I always tell them - Mount Whitney is the HIGHEST point in America; except for some stuff they have in Alaska.

Also, I agree with the OP - Trail Camp is a dump. There is a big rock there that I have used as a meeting point for those who want to dash ahead coming down the switch backs and just as a general rest spot since it's easy to find. Last time I was there leaning against it I realized that it doubles as a restroom. Bummer, since it's VERY close to the water......................................................................DUG
