My buddy DJ, his kid Eric, me and my kid Cy took a trip up the Baldy Bowl on Sunday. We wanted to take a look at the chutes from the top of the bowl (as Stacy suggested) to see what we got ourselves into two weeks ago when we made it about 95% of the way "straight up" the Bowl. After our short trip over to the ridge, we went up to the summit and went down the Devil's Backbone.

Here's a pic of where we were aiming for a couple of weeks ago.

Here's a pic looking down one of the chutes we contemplated two weeks ago. Glad we went back!

We made it to the summit.

QS,

Thank you for sharing your trip and photos. The chute looks quite steep. Mt. Baldy is a tough hike for me because it seems so steep, whereas the Mt. Whitney trail seems so gradual. We are very lucky in So. Cal to have Mt. Baldy, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio so close to our homes.

I knew you'd be right back at it Joe. Looks like the wound is healed! So how was it looking down from the top? Pretty friggin' steep isn't it? I'm glad you're back in action...can't wait for SNOW up there. I feel a bowl climb will be happening in a month or two!!! (hopefully sooner)

Stacy, I can see it now - in the next few weeks Joe will get fitted for crampons, invest in an ice axe, and start challenging Shin's record. The route up the center of the bowl will be re-christened the FrogArt Route by Christmas, and he'll be pulling Baldy doubles by next spring. By the time I get back out there in February he'll be bored to tears with the idea of hiking in Death Valley and climbing Corkscrew Peak, and probably want to drag me up Whitney's East Buttress in whiteout conditions.

Shin is safe, Stacy can kick my A$$, I'm one heck of a slow hiker. What I like about this board is that people are great with the PM's. I've got lots of invites and am honored by Shin's invite while on Baldy.

Stacy is nuts if she thinks I'm doing snow without skis. I went up the Backbone earlier this year (no snow), but found my hike down the Bowl (lots of snow) on the same trip to be a bit more interesting as I slid down most of it on my butt.

I'm excited about Death Valley and a trip up to the Portal (yes, in the snow) if we can do that. For our snow hike up to the Portal though, I think we should send out invites on this site a few weeks prior. The more people, the more fun. And the video we'll post should be pretty funny. Drinks afterwards in Lone Pine, paid by Gary should be nice too.

Gary...Practicing my "Dance" moves for our next Whitney summit.

Slightly off topic....I'm waiting for a new line of Whitney inspired sculptures:
-Frolicking Marmots
-The Bear & The Bear vault
-Dramatic Look Pika
and of course
-The Mosquito

I agree with Tom, tdtz, I would love to see sculptures of the little critters we see in the Whitney Zone.

That was this past summer, man - you snooze, you looze. For next Feb it's all the beer you can drink on me - from my cooler at Texas Spring campground in Death Valley . . .

Re the summit dance: I'll notify SAR to have a chopper ready before we even head up.

I'll take that as a "YES", we're gonna dance on Mt Whitney. And, I have witnesses. If I understand correctly, Bri and Barb are joining us.

Did anybody check out the image of Mt Whitney on the Whitney Cam???? SNOW and Lots of it!

Seriously Joe, you should take a stab at something relevant to the Sierra since that's where a lot of your energy and vision lies now. You are one incredibly talented artist, bro - I know you could sculpt a Sierra wildlife form the likes of which has never been done before. Hell, you've got a ready-made customer base here on the boards - except most of us couldn't afford your stuff, you being such a high-brow arteest-to-the-Hollywood-rich type and all smile.

Bri was looking over my shoulder as I typed this. She (1) says "Hi-Unkie-Joe-I-Love-You", and (2) agrees with me wholeheartedly. She insists on a grouse chick - don't ask me why . . .

I've been watching WhitneyCam all day. And it makes me want to go up there.

I may just take a day off next week and do a dayhike...probably only shoot for trail crest....

Same here. Maybe tonight I can put together a before and after web cam picture, and the day's video to boot.

(A Quillan grouse chick sounds pretty special!)

That's the general plan of operations right now. We'll see where they're at come May of next year. I was impressed with their effort this past weekend. I took them to a trail in the mountains north of the ATL that roughly simulates one-third of the Whitney Main Trail - 4 miles with about 2000 feet of gain, so an 8-mile out-and-back gaining and losing 2K'. They made the summit with me in just a little over 2 hours, and the entire OAB in 5 hours, including close to an hour on the summit for a leisurely lunch. Virtually no whining from the 10 YO diva-wannabe. Gives me hope that she's serious about Whitney next year.

Coupl'a shots from the trek:

Wishing this was the Sierra . . . .

Hmmmmm - maybe the Mountaineer's Route . . .

Come on Joe, you're killin' me!!!
I'm S-L-O-W and the only a$$ I'll be kicking is my own!
You've gotta climb the bowl at least once, it's a blast!
You already have an axe...rent the 'pons for the first time. Better yet, if I buy my G-12's by then, you can use my G-10's.
And if you insist on dragging skis with you, do it. I'll take pictures of you launching off the top the top of a chute as I glissade down behind you.

Gary - He has the axe, just needs the 'pons to complete his ensemble.
You will both be hooked after you do it once. February should be a good time, weather permitting. Our first attempt was mid-Feb this year and we didn't make it due to white out conditions.

I like the re-naming of the route...but if that happens, we all need t-shirts like DJ's.
They will say, "I climbed the FrogArt Route on Baldy!"

Joe and Gary's Excellent Adventure on the East Buttress...
better save that for 2012!

Stacy
