I'm not sure if people have noticed, or can even see it, but I set up the favicon (Favorite Icon) that displays in the browser URL line today. It is actually taken from the 6:47 AM web cam picture this morning.
Here's Joel Baldwin's archive:
http://cams.outel.org/cgi-bin/dir.cgi?cam=whitney

I cropped the peak in the picture, then squeezed it horizontally to 50% width, making the peak sharper (that is how it looks, though, from Iceberg Lake.) So I hope you enjoy the connection.

Here's the old icon image:
And here's the new image:

If you are still seeing the old picture on your browser's url line, you need to tell the browser to "clear the cache". If you need help, I'll post how.

Do we have any images that we want to use in the Message Posting Tips examples?

I posted this over in the shout box:
http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/webcam/whitney_s001.jpg

We will accumulate some on this site, but that is down the road.

I see the Message Posting Tips is up. Thank you!! I'll fix the Feature Topics link to it soon.

Actually, Rod, you are talking about your "avatar". See the Wikipedia meaning.

You can set up your avatar in your profile: My stuff, Edit Profile
Then scroll to the bottom to see the options.

You will need a small picture -- the instructions say 80 x 80 pixels. Mine is bigger, but the forum software scales it down when it is displayed. Mine is a picture I set up for this purpose over in Smugmug.

Thanks Steve. So the pic has be at a hosted site then? You can't just take an emailed picture and post it I take it.You didn't know I was so CC did you? That is why I have to hire so many IT guys for Hops or ask a kid for help.

I just worked on the site, and changed it so now users can upload a picture to use as an avatar. You do that in your profile, same as before. I just uploaded my avatar into the site using the profile options.

Only thing is, the avatar picture file you upload must be no larger than 10k (mine is under 4k). Most emailed pictures are much bigger, so you will need to futz around with the file to reduce its size.

> You can't just take an emailed picture and post it I take it.
Unfortunately, no.

There are various ways to alter a picture. I uploaded my shoes picture to my smugmug site, cropped it to what I wanted, then copied the thumbnail (that Smugmug automatically creates) back down to my computer (Firefox allows you to copy/save a picture.) The thumbnail was small enough (3261 bytes, and about the right dimensions).

> You didn't know I was so CC did you?

I'm really not surprised. Most people are. Learning how to work with pictures can take quite a while. Don't sweat it.

Maybe someone here would volunteer to take an emailed picture and adjust it for you.

Thanks Steve,
I'll get my son or daughter to do it for me. They are both amazing with computers.I have an account with someone for a host for my pictures.I need to download all my Whitney and Yosemite pictures into it anyways.
My son designed the current Hopsports webpage. We had hired a webpage desiner origionaly but my son didn't like it so he went into the back office and re-did it.He added all the videos and pictures and did the current layout. The only problem is getting him to take time help out poor old pops.

On a related topic, what determines whether a yellow smiley face or a gray sleepy/bored face is displayed right next to one's user name (CaT, in my case) any time one posts something in any of the forums? I've noticed tnat mine has alternated between the smiley yellow face and the sleepy/bored gray face from time to time, without my doing a thing.

Rod, your son has done a great job with the Hopsports site. You should be proud. Now to convince him that you need a little help with an avatar. smirk

CaT, I noticed that too -- I was on-line, but saw the sleepy-head next to my name sometimes, too. It is probably due to lag times between your doing something on the board, and how often users' activity is logged in the database.

It's gotta be a tough job making a web site look like a real-time system when actually each time you click somewhere on the site, it is a completely unique transaction.

If you note the Who's Online box, and then click the Who's Online link, you will get a different result.

Steve
I broke down and gasp... asked my wife for help. Dang if she didn't get all my Whitney pics uploaded and helped me get the pic for my avatar.
This picture captures my emotional and spiritual moment when I summited one month before my prostate cancer surgery. As I touched the hut I had an epiphony and knew at that moment I was going to survive and be alright. It was one of the most important and powerful experiences in my life to summit Whitney. Touching the hut symbolized that I could and would and overcome all obstacles.
