I know the weather is not looking very promising but I am looking for a couple of hikers to trek to the summit of Whitney and brave the cold with me next week..

I hiked Mt Langley yesterday and the Summit was epic.. weather was not bad either..

Not promising indeed! Snow or chance of snow is forecast for the entire week.

Even if you just go part way up the trail, it will certainly be beautiful with fresh snow. If you go, please bring back pictures!

Tommy, how's the trail at Langley? I did Whitney on Labor Day and was thinking about Langley, but don't know if the trail will still be visible with all the snow activity (never been there).

Can't get off work on Friday. I wanted to acclimate partly on the 23rd and going as far up Whitney as possible safely on the 24th if Langley doesn't work out.

Langley was just awsome this past weekend.. it gets much less snow than Whitney.
I love the views from the summit!

Langley is a trail hike until about 12,300'. At that point, one trail becomes 30, literally, as people pick their own route to the mountain. It's not impossible to do by yourself or with friends you haven't done it, it is just going to take you a lot longer.

If snow is going to be an issue, I would utilize New Army Pass. Army can get a bit dicey in less than optimum conditions.

Yeah, if going on Langley, I was for sure going to use New Army. I heard the Old Army pass can be dangerous with snow present.

From what you're saying and what I've read, I might have to pass on Langley. I tried Cloudripper two weeks ago. Lost the trail in the snow, went cross country and it was a pain in the a**; turned into a real bush whacking trip.

I'm not a veteran like the folks here, so I'll stick to the established trails during this snowy season and see how far I can safely get up on Whitney.....or I'll just do Baldy via the Blue Ridge Trail. grin

Beyond ~12,300' Langley is anything but a trail. As I said there are as my routes to the mountain as there are people who hike it. If you pick the right one it is easy to follow. However, it is very easy to get off track, if you are new to all this and traveling with people who haven't done this mountain previously. We cut over an hour off our time the 2nd time, more if you include utilizing Army Pass the 2nd time.

Man, I would not want anything to do with Cloudripper with snow around.

Travis, I didn't do Cloudripper. Got there, looked up eek, and backed off. I went to Agassiz, and got almost all the way up, but had to back off as well. I wasn't making good time with the snow. Some parts were too deep and I had to hop from boulder to boulder. I figured I couldn't make it up and down before the sun set, and didn't want to be stuck up there. Here's a picture while part way up Agassiz.

I'll be back to summit both in the summer of 2011.
