My husband and I were attempting to climb Whitney October 5-7th but had to turn around on the 5th at Outpost Camp because of the crazy snow. My husband has summited before and would like to attempt the summit this weekend (Saturday,October 15th) but as aday trip this time. I would really appreciate any info. from hikers who have recently been to the summit. Snow melt, Ice, etc.
Thanks so much,
Belinda

Belinda,

Richard P posted some pictures from Sunday on wpsmb in the Fall Conditions thread. Here's his picture near the top of the switchbacks:

His entire set of pics is here. In that same thread, Richard wrote, "I didn't use any gear last Sunday, but lots of people were using MicroSpikes and crampons."

Checking the Mt Whitney Weather (link to the left) NOAA weather for Whitney gives a slight chance of snow up high on Friday, and both Dennis Mattinson's weather and NOAA call for a chance of snow on Sunday.

Based on the above, I'd say Saturday might be a good day to go for it again. Take warm clothing.

Just be prepared for snow in case it should happen and have your plan and back up plan ready. As Steve mentioned the forecast is for snow on Friday and Sunday. Maybe you'll have a window. Be careful and use good judgment. Whitney will always be there.

Do you have any reccomendations for this weekend? Planning to drive down to do a Whitney summit. Never been there in the fall/ winter transition period.

Thank you,

There has been recent snow and there is a search and rescue in progress at Whitney for 3 missing men.Be careful and don't go farther than your skill and experience will allow you. This is becoming a time of year for experienced winter climbers only.

kitt, not sure, it was in another thread, but they didn't go missing while going up. They reached the summit and texted for help in the hut.
