Well i just found this Wonderful sight And was curious as to how Whitney is in the middle of January. I know conditions can change on a day to day basis but was curious what i could expect.
I did Pikes Peak last April And encountered tons of snow so I have some experience dealing with that.

Also do i have to register for a permit this time of year or can you get one on sight.

Thanks

Mt. Whitney can summitted all year. It all depends on your skill level. There is plenty of information available on the internet concerning the starting points, routes to the summit and gear and clothing required.

You need a permit to hike within the Whitney Zone 24/7/365 for both day and overnight trips. However, there are no quotas in the winter, conditions are the limit the crowds.

Welcome to the WhitneyZone, Dungeonsound. Are you coming out this way in January on a trip, or are you looking to do Whitney in the dead of winter on purpose?

It is pretty tough (and treacherous) in January.

From a previous topic here:

So, you want to climb the Mountaineer's Route in winter?

While this topic refers to the more challenging Mountaineer's Route up Whitney, the points made in Bob R's initial post should be taken to heart even if doing "only" the Whitney Main Trail during winter.

I plan to be out that way for a trip to start with and was thinking of adding this onto my list of climbs. Just not sure how much harder it would be compared to Pikes Peak. Also would be looking for a possible partner.
