What workouts do any of you do? Gym,treadmill,running, walking,hiking?
I got my circuit training in today.I did 2 sets on isokenetic machines. Torso twist,incline bench,squats,running mans(seated leg extension and leg curl)military and curls. These are special machines that I have that have resistence without weights.When you push/pull into the handle bars there is variable resistence which you pre-set. If you stop pushing or pulling the bar there is no weight or resistence.Therefore there is no downward concentric loading or contraction of the muscle.There is only eccentric contraction through the range of motion.This allows strengthening without tissue breakdown and no sorenes following a workout. Tomorrow I run the stadium stairs.

Kevin your exercise is definately a lot more fun way to do it. Wish I could hike more often than I do.No time for it during the week and family activities most weekends.Got to envy you. The old adage - the best training for hiking is hiking - is true, but doing it is the problem for many. I used to do a lot of climber, stationary bike and ab work before going on a hiking trip, but would often die the first day out of the chute, and spend the second just being a hurting puppy.
A few years ago I focused on doing the majority of my workouts at a smallish mountain just ten minutes away from my home (Kennesaw, a NPS-run battlefield park), and it made a world of difference for me. Even though it's very low elevation (1800 ft), the trail system gives me the opportunity to get about 2000 feet of elevation gain in a short 4-5 mile hike. The elevation gain/loss as a training tool seemed to make all the difference when I hit the trail for real, especially if I loaded down a 3000 cu in pack with about 35 pounds during my workouts. Two hours would generally do it, so I could hit it early before work or in the evening. In the 6 weeks prior to Whitney this past summer, I probably put in 200 miles of training on these nearby trails. Didn't help with altitude, of course, but my legs were ready.
For variety, I mix it up with mountain biking every once in a while on weekends. Or even "backpacking" the streets of my very hilly neighborhood, and sometimes the local high school stadium steps.

Practically the only single constant in my life has been a 3x per week workout during my lunch break. It's primarily jogging -- I put in a 4-mile run on Monday and Friday, and on Wednesday, I do a weight circuit and then a 2-mile run. My mile times have been slowly decreasing over the decades. In high school top competition condition, I'd knock off 7 miles at a 7-minute pace (and 2 hours later I'd put in a regular track workout!) 20 years later, it was about 7:30 per mile. Now, I'm good for just under 8. Oh, and before every backpack trip, I always load my pack down with gallon jugs of water and walk a few miles two or three times in the week before the hike. THAT really helps prevent the shock to the body at the end of the first day on the trail.

Now, I'm good for just under 8. As a former college sprinter - lo, those many years ago - an 8-minute mile sounds pretty damn fast to me. Anything longer than a quarter-mile I considered cross country.

Ha! I always considered those sprinters as wimps! But then they could go to a track meet and win 2 or three races, sometimes more. And after my one, I was done for several days.

Steve, here's a "wimp" schedule for you: most of my track meets involved the 100, the 220, the 440, the 4x110 relay and the 4x440 relay (yards really dates me, huh?). In high school the coach had me long-jumping and high-jumping as well. I'd typically puke my guts up at least once a meet.
I considered the distance races as simply a very thoughful interlude between my sprints.

For me, sprint = asthma. So I have to focus more on longer distances, gradually working up to a desired speed after the first mile or so.

For me any running=sore knee(menicusectomy from football in 1971) and low back pain.Running stairs doesn't hurt knee or back. Steve it doesn't seem like you have lost much in 20 years.Of course I have a patient that walks marathons in 6 hours.What's that like 11 minute miles walking?

I posted my daily routine on the WPSMB on October 14, 2009, so here it is again only with a few more items I did not mention:
1000 crunches 500 pushups 100 pullups + 100 vertical knee raises 100 bardips
Keep in mind these are not all done AT ONCE. I am NOT that CRAZY! Caveat: I have been doing this for a long time.
I crank out the pushups and crunches in the morning. 70 pushups, then 200 crunches, followed by 30 pushups. I also try to squeeze in some core strengthening exercises like the "plank."
How do and when do I? Commercials are good for somethings all the time. When you are watching TV and a commercial comes on, blast 20 or 25 pushups every commercial. Keep a log. The numbers add up! You will be amazed, "I did THAT many pushups?"
My wife and I also have our own Tuff Stuff weight equipment. Smith-Half Cage Ensemble, Roman Chair, Vertical Knee Raise/Dip Stand, Leg Press/Hack Squat, Bench with Accessory Combo Rack, barbells, dumbbells (adjustable), weights (750#). We chose 3 stations. We try not to "collide" and "overlap" with each other. If we happen to come to one station at the same time, "rock-paper-scissors" and go from there. Our circuit training focuses on different muscle groups. Then another 3 stations and so on and so on. It takes us an hour to complete our training. Pretty intense.
We walk a mile after dinner.
We try to hike in the wilderness on the weekends. If that is not possible, then we tread the foothills around our house.
We have a pool.
After our workouts, it is a dip into the spa set at 102 degrees for 20 minutes. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
We try to squeeze in a 3-mile run before our weightlifting every other day. Sometimes this is not possible, but we will get this routine down.
I also have a drum set. Good for the upper body and great aerobic workout. Neighbors don't seem to mind. Sometimes my relatives come over for a garage session. We ROCK!
That is pretty much it.
Nobody ever drowned in sweat.

And to think I have a herniated disc and a iliopsoas that flares up once in a while. Pain is weakness leaving the body! Ouch...I hurt my mouse finger again... Eye of the Tiger... Have fun.
