Can anyone tell me how far up the portal road one can expect to drive before reaching the "road closed" sign? How far is the sign from the trailhead? Has anyone driven past the sign recently and what are the road conditions?

Normally, the road closed sign is placed just before the beginning of the first switchback, which is approx. 3.5 miles from the TH. I'll let others answer the rest.

I saw Richard P on the other forum posted a picture a week or two ago where he drove over snow all the way up to the Portal.

But that may have been ideal conditions. I wouldn't go over the snow unless I had chains to put on in case I got stuck. And doing that is definitely at your own risk!!!

People have gotten stuck up there in previous years, especially if they drive up there and park, and go on a hike. Then a storm comes and drops enough snow to strand their vehicle.

That being said, if you check the webcam view today, you can see a section of road in the picture, and there is no snow visible in that area. So I'd bet the road is pretty much free of snow well beyond the sign.

Yeah! Pictures are sorely needed! And we have a nice spot for you to upload if you don't have a place of your own:

The other consideration besides snow is possible rockfall.

I took some photos of the road today, I had to hike at least 3 miles to get to the trail head. The ice was too tricky for me in the dark. I hiked the main to the entrance to "the zone" and the northfork to just below lower boy scout. I took pictures until my batteries died. I had trouble putting them on. I am not very good with computers.

Dolbybear, if you email the pictures to me, that would work.

I've sent you an email with some steps to upload to the picture gallery.
