This incident occurred on my old stamping grounds. According to an earlier report, a handhold gave way. Yeah, this stuff is sandstone & portable handholds are perfectly normal. And perfectly horrid. Our local Yosemite/Sierra granite is Nirvana. If that is all you have ever climbed on, you might not realize just how wonderful our playground is compared to the rest of the world.

"Anyone venturing out into dense bushland to trek, rock climb, abseil or go canyoning should take a locator beacon with them. They can be obtained from Blue Mountains Police or the National Parks and Wildlife Service," he said.

I don't know whether the locator beacon is free, or involves a rental fee. Clearly, the program works - at least if you have a partner or can still activate it.

Schist: To know it is to fear it! (I knew schist before I knew granite)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Schist is proof that god has a sense of humour! (the most beautiful monoliths in the world are made of schist; to touch the stuff is a fool's paradise)

I recall geology classes where my fellow students had fun with terms like, "Well that's just a pile of schist!".

You can always leave mainstream media to help push an agenda. Beacon greatly helped in this mans rescue so everyone should have mandatory beacons right?. Here we go again...

Or i'd rather not lol

There is info on the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad site.

Apparently it is cost-effective for the police to loan them out for free. I didn't see anyplace that stated that use is mandatory, so it seems like a good plan.

Optional free or small fee borrow is a good idea anywhere I think.
