Cindy, that mountain's news does not always get here. And even though the normal route is easy in fine conditions, the wind, cold and thin air can kill.

When I was there, an American man with HAPE was evacuated from 17,000, a British woman with HACE was dragged down from 19,500, there was an attempted body retrieval of a Polish man from the summit, and our 2-man team rescued a 2-man Italian team storm-bound in the Canaleta. Besides all of that, there were 9 total deaths during the austral summer climbing season of 1998. Harvey

She is!

We did the traverse in Jan 2008. Got stopped by 80 winds at White Rocks (19,800 ft). We aborted summit and 20 mintues later is when I fell and broke my leg. Had to hike down to base camp (5,000 ft vertical). I has helivaced out with a man with HAPE.

One day I will go back and try again but that mountain has some wicked weather.

Well, Kurt is down there, now. Perhaps he'll have info on what happened when he gets back.
