Whitney_lvr, it is perfectly ok to take others on your hike, but I think most find that with all the coordinating and such for an adventure of this type, trying to hook up with someone at the trail head is difficult.
On the other hand, you can release your extra permit, and it gets placed back into the Recreation.gov system, so someone else is sure to snap it up.
If you don't have any takers, be sure to help others by calling in and releasing the permit, and try to do it a week or so before the date.
