This was in the Fresno Bee Oct. 25:

Google cameras map popular Grand Canyon trails
By FELICIA FONSECA - Associated Press

Quote:
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. -- Google and its street-view cameras already have taken users to narrow cobblestone alleys in Spain using a tricycle, inside the Smithsonian with a push cart and to British Columbia's snow-covered slopes by snowmobile.

The search giant now has brought its all-seeing eyes - mounted for the first time on a backpack - down into the Grand Canyon, showcasing the attraction's most popular hiking trails on the South Rim and other walkways.

It's the latest evolution in mapping technology for the Mountain View, Calif., company, which has used a rosette of cameras to photograph thousands of cities and towns in dozens of countries for its Street View feature. With a click of the mouse, Internet users are transported virtually for a 360-degree view of locales they may have read about only in tourist books and seen in flat, 2-D images.

I caught this in the news here in Las Vegas also. Actually, I think I read about it online. I believe they're going to do the Bright Angel Trail, the South Kaibab Trail, and the Rim Trail . . . what I read didn't indicate the North Kaibab Trail but one would hope that will be in the mix too eventually.

Can the Whitney Main Trail be far behind?!

2112 -- when virtually EVERY square foot of the earth's land surface will be accessible in this or a similar way?

In an edit just after writing the above -- I noticed in the video just above this post that it appears he's walking downhill through the Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab. So maybe the North Kaibab Trail will be subject to street view sooner rather than later.

Great toy. Now, if only they had decent maps to go with it.

actually, he's walking through the 'tunnel' - or arch - on the bright angel trail just below the bright angel's trailhead on the south rim.

You're right, of course -- I'd forgotten all about that. Probably because my mind was so focused on finishing the whole hike at that point, which likely left that tunnel not registering in my mind as much as it might otherwise would have.

Google Maps Street View is heading to the popular wilderness trails to map them out in panoramic "street view" virtual reality. This ambitious project kicked off recently with a team doing the Grand Canyon. I'm sure Mt Whitney, Half Dome, and the John Muir Trail will be coming soon.

Some day this gear will seem very primitive:

SierraNevada, hope you don't mind I added your post to this thread.

Interesting that Google received permission to create the street view in the National Park. Their endeavors came up at the Seki Wilderness Planning workshop, and the presenter gruffly reported that that option had already been denied in Sequoia N.P. (...from the same dude who stated people couldn't possibly have a wilderness experience if they carried a Spot.)

They did acknowledge that a non-profit could create a video or street-view setup, but the "non-profit" part was the key. ....hmmmm.....

Sorry for the duplicate thread, Steve. I heard this story on NPR awhile back, thought about it today. I should've searched the site before posting this. I just clicked back a few pages and didn't see it, but I do vaguely remember reading it now. I think I need one of those soccer balls on my head to keep track of things.

No worries. The link to the Google blog you found adds to the thread.
