It's a "DE-Tour". Reportedly cost them three hours. Notice the spur on their route part way up the right side of the loop? The left half of the loop is the Mountaineers Route. The left half is the MMWT (Main Mt Whitney Trail).

The big loop is what people do by going up the MR, and descending the MMWT.

Looks as though they started up the creek that leads to the east side of Carillon. I can well imagine that it cost them 3 hours, and much energy.

I'm guessing they will look more closely at the route on their next trip.
